Do I need a search box for my website?

Updated: Mar 21, 2019

A well designed website is important for any business and it’s not all about looks. Your visitors need to find the information they need (and the information you want them to find!) quickly, with no more than two clicks, otherwise they will get frustrated and go elsewhere.

A good web designer will be able to give you advice on how many pages you will need and how to structure your website to keep your bounce rate low. In particular, you’ll have to make sure your homepage is well designed as in most cases that’s the first page your visitors will see.

There are many elements you can add to your website to make navigation easier, and one of them is definitely the search box.

A search box improves user experience, by giving visitors the chance to find what they are looking for in one click.

If your website is well designed and structured, users won’t really need to use the search box, as the path to the information or product they are looking for will be clear and easy to find however, it’s always good to have the option there, especially as it doesn’t cost anything.

A search bar is particularly important for large websites with a lot of information or products, like schools, hospitals or Amazon, but may not be necessary for smaller, well structured websites.

At the end of the day, every website is different and will need a different set of tools and functions – make sure you discuss your needs and objectives clearly with your web designer at the planning stage.
